Rectangles can be created using the rectangle tool under "New Objects".
To create a rectangle, proceed as follows:
- Select the "Drawing Tools" from the toolbar.
- In the first row, you will find the simple rectangle tool.
- Click at the point in the document where you want to draw the rectangle and hold down the left mouse button.
- Now drag the mouse to the point where the rectangle should end.
- Afterwards, you can edit the rectangle.
ℹ If rectangles are drawn while holding down the Shift key, a square is created.

There are two rectangle tools in the drawing tools – which one should I use?
You observed correctly – one rectangle is under "Tools" (orange framed) and the other under "Shapes" (green framed).
While the upper tool must remain a rectangle, the shape rectangle allows changes to the shape into a polygon. This cannot be edited with the line/corner dialog. A small example of possible changes:

The properties of rectangles
Through the toolbar and the context menu, you can access the properties dialog of rectangles. In this dialog, you will find many options to make specific settings for graphic objects.
Access via the toolbar:
If you prefer to access via the context menu, select the first entry "Properties" from the menu.
Navigation
Through the navigation of the properties dialog, you can select the various options.
The extent of the functionality provided depends on the assigned rights.
Preview
At the bottom left of the dialog is the icon for the preview. When activated, you see the left icon; when deactivated, the eye is crossed out. By default, the preview functionality is turned off.
Values are only assigned when you
- press the "Assign" button or
- switch to another section within the properties.
Back to the original values
This is a "mini-undo" – with this button, you can return to the values that were last assigned to the paragraph. This is helpful if you have tried various things and want to return to the original value without having to close the dialog.
Close
The properties dialog will be closed. Changes that have not yet been assigned will be lost. No confirmation will be requested.
Assign
The changes made will be assigned.
Basic
x
Position of the objects in the horizontal direction.
y
Position of the objects in the vertical direction.
Width
Specify the width for the selected objects. The width of the display is not changed by increasing the width of a line.
Height
Specify the height for the selected objects.
Bracket
If the bracket is activated, the width and height will be changed proportionally.

Rotation
You can set the rotation angle of an object. It rotates around the center of the object. To rotate, you can use the small point as a control element. It snaps in 45° increments. If exact values are to be entered, click on the value in the middle of the rotation input and enter the desired value there.
Image
Fit
This determines the image fitting mode that should apply when inserting an image into a rectangle. The rectangle thus becomes an image frame:
In the example shown above, the initial image frame is square.

Do not adjust - the size and position of the image will no longer be automatically changed after the image has been manually scaled and positioned. Note: If an image is imported into an image frame with this mode, the mode is discarded and the image is always changed to "Frame Filling".

Center - the image is positioned in its original size (100%) centered to the cropping object.

Frame filling - the image size is proportionally changed so that the cropping object is completely filled. The image height or width matches the cropping object. The protruding part is centered to the cropping object. In this mode, the image can be cropped.

Proportional - the image size is proportionally adjusted to the cropping object. The remaining space in height or width is centered to the cropping object. In this mode, the image frame may not be completely filled.

Fully centered - the image is positioned in its original size (100%) in the cropping object. The image is positioned vertically upwards and horizontally in the center.

Variable frame height - the image is scaled to the width of the image frame, and then the height of the image frame is adjusted. If two objects with the same Y-position and height are grouped, both frames will be adjusted to each other. The smaller image is decisive, so that the taller image has a white margin on the left and right. (see the following example)
The text below the image frames is displaced by the adjustment of the frame height.

Variable frame width - the image is scaled to the height of the specified image frame, and then the width of the image frame is adjusted.
Position
Specify how the image should be aligned in the image frame according to the corresponding fitting mode. This setting is only relevant for the fitting options "Frame Filling" and "Proportional".

Name
Enter the name of the object, which can be referenced when reformatting.
Crop
With these parameters, the crop can be specified by the display frame and the rectangle itself.
Three options are available. In the examples shown, images are used as the effect is easier to recognize.
Crop at the display frame
Normally, objects are cropped at the inner edge of the display frame. If you do not want this, you will find the switch at that point.

If you have a multiple frame as a display frame, you can specify that the object is not cropped at the outer display frame, but at the inner one. This option is usually disabled:

Flexibility
This section contains settings for vertical alignment and growing height.
Vertical alignment settings
V-Factor top
Vertical alignment factor for the distance upwards. The factor is a whole number. The absolute value in the display results from the space to be distributed.
V-Factor bottom
Vertical alignment factor for the distance downwards. The factor is a whole number. The absolute value in the display results from the space to be distributed.
Distance top
If you have text frames that have been linked through the vertical alignment function, you can read and change the minimum distance between the predecessor object of the selected text frame and the text frame here. The value will be entered there once the vertical alignment group has been fixed.
Distance bottom
If you have text frames that have been linked through the vertical alignment function, you can read and change the minimum distance between the successor object of the selected text frame and the text frame here. The value will be entered there once the vertical alignment group has been fixed.
Growing height
With this function, you can achieve that objects change their size depending on others.
Top
Specifies an offset value by which the growing height is increased upwards.
Bottom
Specifies an offset value by which the growing height is increased downwards.
Text flow
Rectangles can be assigned a text flow (contour set) so that the text flows around this object. Different distances can be entered for the various sides.
Existing limitation: The contour guidance only occurs on one side of the object within a text column.
Type
Currently, the contour set can be turned on and off here. There is only the type "Outside".
Distance
Here you can specify what distance the text should have from the object. If the bracket behind the distance value field is activated, you will have the option to specify the distances for the four individual sides.
Graphic
Inner frame lines
The frames of new objects always grow inwards by default. If the default setting is turned off, the lines grow from the center inwards and outwards. This also makes the objects correspondingly larger, by one point for a 1pt line.
Influence on display height
If the option is set, a graphic object is considered when determining the height of the display. Otherwise, the object can also be placed in the cut at the end of the display. Text frames have this property by default; all other graphic objects do not.
Rights
At this point, the rights can be defined. The following rights are available:
Position
If set, the objects can no longer be moved. Stylo displays a symbol that makes this clear:
Size
Objects cannot be manually enlarged or reduced if this parameter has been set by you.
Content
The content cannot be changed if the option has been activated by you. The fact that the content is unchangeable is indicated by a red keyboard symbol.
Delete
If this option is set, the object cannot be deleted. If an object has been protected from deletion, this is indicated to the user by a lock symbol.
Please note that these modification restrictions are limitations that prevent the user from making manual changes (e.g., in dialogs, working with the mouse, or touch actions). Automatic changes, for example, through text input or because other elements influence this object, are not affected.
