Preview
At the bottom left of the dialog, you will find the icon for the preview. When activated, you see the left icon; when deactivated, the eye is crossed out. By default, the preview functionality is turned off.
Values are only assigned when you
- press the "Assign" button or
- switch to another section within the properties.
Back to the original values
This is a "mini-undo" – with this button, you return to the values that were last assigned to the paragraph. This is helpful if you have tried different things and want to revert to the original value without having to close the dialog.
Close
The properties dialog will be closed. Changes that have not yet been assigned will be lost. No confirmation will be requested.
Assign
The changes made will be assigned.
Basic
Width: Display width in millimeters. If the Stylo is integrated into another system, the width can only be changed through that system. In such a case, the width field is read-only.
Height: Display height in millimeters.
Bracket: If the bracket is activated, the width and height are changed proportionally.
Proportions are considered:
Proportions are not considered:
Margin
In the margin tab, distances to the display margin can be set. The bracket can determine whether the assignment should apply to all sides or each side separately. In the former case, only one input field for all sides is displayed.
If no text frame is directly connected to the display frame, the values for the margins are used for visualizing guidelines and when aligning objects for display.
The value "Margin bottom" ensures a minimal distance between the text frame and the end of the display for displays with variable height.
Administration
Continuous spell checking: If a spell checker has been installed on the server and is administered for Stylo, you can activate the continuous spell checking here. This setting is document-specific.
You can find more information about spell checking here.
Remember deleted objects: Text frames that are deleted are only made invisible in the document. They can be restored later using the "Restore objects" function. The prerequisites are:
- the text frames must have a text flow name and
- they should be linked, otherwise the insertion will not occur at the correct position.
Margin settings: You can specify which objects are allowed in the margin area:
- All: The margin area is not protected.
- Only graphics: Graphic objects - including image frames with content - can be placed in the margin area.
- Only images: Images can be positioned in the margin area. Images in image frames are not counted.
- None: It is not allowed to place any objects in the margin area.
The margin area refers to the entire display and does not consider any indents.
Margin without line thickness: If this option is activated, Stylo calculates the margins without considering the line thickness. Since the margins for the objects positioned near the top margin are also set this way, it makes sense to set the option to achieve a visually equal distance between the top margin and the first object, as well as between the last object and the bottom margin.
The bottom distance is calculated by default between the bottom edge of the last object and the display line margin (red arrow); if the option is activated, it is calculated to the display margin (green arrow).
This change was introduced with version Stylo 2019.9. Documents created with older versions will not be automatically changed; the option will be activated at that point. In the Stylo administration, the option can be enabled: it will then apply to all new documents created using the "New" functionality. Copies of existing displays will not be changed.
Trim/Crop
Crop Settings
Crop at own inner frame: This allows you to specify that color backgrounds, gradients, and background images are cropped at the innermost frame of the display when it consists of multiple frames.
Bleed
This area displays the bleed values passed by the display system. They cannot be changed within Stylo.
The bleed is represented in the document with a dotted line.
Flexibility
Design Mode
When the design mode is activated, you can make adjustments in Stylo without automation affecting the positioning and size of objects.
Standard | Design Mode | |
---|---|---|
Text frame size adjusts automatically | yes | no |
Object positions change depending on preceding elements | yes | no |
Relative horizontal alignment | yes | no |
Relative vertical alignment | yes | no |
Growing line | yes | no |
If a document with automatic functions is brought into design mode, these are removed from the documents without being able to be restored by undoing the "Design Mode" function or the undo function.
Please note! The design mode does not put Stylo into a special mode for pattern construction and can be used for both displays and templates.
Flexible Display
When a display is switched to "Flex-Display" mode, changing the width of the display also changes the widths of the objects within the display.
The margin is proportionally reduced or increased.
For objects that extend across the entire width of the display in the starting position and extend at x-position 0, only the width is changed. For image boxes, the appropriate fitting mode must be considered.
Example:
This is the starting display with a width of 90mm. It has been assigned the property "Flexible Display".
Then the width is increased to 130mm. The display representation changes as follows:
These functions do not change any font settings such as size, family, and style or line spacing.
Vertical Alignment
You can toggle vertical alignment on or off with this checkbox.
This will automatically distribute space between different graphic objects, which can be parameterized using proportional factors on the graphic objects. For more information, see the section on pattern construction.
Maximum wedge value: The maximum vertical wedge value can be set to determine the maximum space that can be distributed by vertical alignment between two objects.
Vertical alignment top/Vertical alignment bottom: In these two fields, you can specify how many shares of the remaining space above and below the display should be distributed by vertical alignment. Whole, positive values are allowed. If the value 0 is entered, the distances will not change.
You can find more information about vertical alignment here.
Variable Height
Control the variable height of the display with the settings. If values are set to "0", there is no specification – for flowing text displays, for example, the variable height is activated, but no further settings are necessary.
The values for minimum and maximum height will also be remembered when the variable height is turned off. Therefore, it can also be easily toggled on and off via the display palette.
Minimum Height
With this value, you specify how small a display can become.
Maximum Height
This value controls how large a display can become. If the maximum height is exceeded, an overflow box is displayed.
Step Size
A display pattern with variable height can be assigned a minimum height and/or a maximum height. Additionally, it can be specified that the height of the display may only be increased or decreased in fixed steps, e.g., it can only grow in steps of 1 mm or 5 mm.
Text
Font Pool
Here you can check and change which font pool is used in the document. If a font pool has been specified for a document by an external program (such as the display system), it will not be displayed here. An external font pool has a higher priority than a font pool defined in the document.
If the font pool is selected in the document, it can be changed while the document is open, and Stylo will load the fonts accordingly. If the font pool was specified by an external program, reopening the document is necessary.
If a font pool is switched to one that does not contain the same fonts when loading, the display should be checked for missing fonts.
Typography
Underline line thickness (%): The value for the thickness of the underline can be set as a standard in the administration, as well as overwritten in any document in the properties. If a default value of 0% is stored as standard, a default value from Stylo is used. In this case, there is a difference in the determination of the underline thickness between normal font cuts and bolder font cuts. If you want to avoid this difference, a field must be defined in the field - this applies to both normal and bold font cuts.
Exponent size (%): Indicates the font size of exponents as a percentage of the current font size.
Exponent offset (%): Indicates the offset of exponents as a percentage in relation to the baseline.
Index size (%): Indicates the font size of indices as a percentage of the current font size.
Index offset (%): Indicates the offset of indices as a percentage in relation to the baseline.
Ligatures: This function allows the use of ligatures to be enabled. This combines two or more characters into one character. This includes common combinations such as fi, fl, ff, ffi, or ffl. For this to work, the fonts must contain these ligature glyphs in the character set. These ligatures are then treated as a unit when positioning the insertion point and selecting text. Pressing the "Delete" key deletes the entire ligature to the right of the insertion point, while pressing the ← (Backspace) key breaks the ligature and only deletes the first character to the left of the insertion point.
The display on the screen is browser-dependent and independent of the settings in Stylo.
In general, ligatures are only used in German when the characters to be connected belong to the same word stem. For example, in the word "flicken," the fl can be replaced by the corresponding ligature, but in the words "Kaufleute" or "Brotzeit," it cannot. To correct the "false" ligatures generated by automation, the special characters menu has been supplemented with the ligature separator character, which can be inserted between two characters to prevent the automatic generation of a ligature.
Aesthetic font size: If the function is activated, the font size is automatically determined based on the lowercase letters (the x-height). Different heights of the lowercase letters, which can occur when using different font families within a paragraph, are balanced out, resulting in a significantly calmer font appearance.
left: without Aesthetic font size; right: with Aesthetic font size
Due to the different basis for calculating the font size, a different exclusion will likely result. Therefore, the function should be applied with caution to existing displays.
The function is currently found in the beta section of the display settings.
Color
Color space: Select the desired color space for the display. The setting options in the color dialogs are adjusted based on this setting.
The default setting for the color space, which is used for new documents, can be set in the administration.
Grayscale only: By activating grayscale in the document, all elements except imported PDF files are converted. This also applies to uploaded objects and elements from galleries.
If there are still color elements or color images in the motif when calling up a motif in grayscale mode, these elements are displayed in grayscale. The conversion only occurs for screen display. The color information remains internally and can be evaluated when switching back to color mode.
This setting also applies to PDF generation (except for overflow display) and converts all color elements and color images to grayscale. Limitation: PDF graphics cannot be converted to grayscale by Stylo during PDF output.
Indents
The values for the indent specify the distance from the display frame line to the display margin. Whether and how the elements are visible in the event of an overlap of the display frame line is determined by the settings under "Trim/Crop" in the same dialog.
Example: In the following display, the upper display frame is to be moved downwards.
Deprecated
This section lists functions that are now outdated but must remain in the application for backward compatibility reasons. These functions are not up to date with current technology, and their use is not recommended, especially when it comes to implementing new patterns or displaying current content. It is important to be aware that using these outdated functions may lead to problems, as they may not be compatible with new technologies or standards. Therefore, users interested in optimizing their applications should avoid these functions.
Create text frame: If the option is set, a text frame is created that is connected to the display frame. If the option is released, that text frame is released.
Didot unit: If a document is created with the "Didot unit" property, points are used instead of Didot points. This option can only be set when creating a document and serves only for control at this point. Changing the status is not intended.
