This dialog allows you to change the selected text. Information on creating paragraph formats for the catalog can be found here.
Controls
Navigation
Through the navigation in the paragraph format, you can select the various sections of paragraph formatting.
The extent of the functionality provided depends on the assigned rights.
Preview
At the bottom left of the dialog is the icon for the preview. When activated, you see the left icon; when deactivated, the eye is crossed out. By default, the preview functionality is turned off.
Values are only assigned when you
-
press the "Assign" button or
-
switch to another section within the properties.
Back to the original values
This is a "mini-undo" – with this button, you return to the values that were last assigned to the paragraph. This is helpful if you have tried different things and want to revert to the original value without having to close the dialog.
Close
The properties dialog will be closed. Changes that have not yet been assigned will be lost. No confirmation will be requested.
Assign
The changes made will be assigned.
Basic
This section allows you to assign spacing and indents to the paragraph.
Indent
First line left:
The indent applies only to the first line on the left. The indent defined here is additive to the left indent. For a hanging indent, it is necessary to specify a negative indent here. A specified negative value for "First line left" will never cause the text to be positioned outside the text frame.
Left:
The indent for the left margin starting from the second line. Negative values are not allowed. A "hanging" indent can be created by entering a positive value for the left indent and a corresponding negative value for the first line indent in the paragraph format.
Right:
The indent for the right margin of the display. Negative values are not allowed. The right indent affects every line of the paragraph, including the first line of the paragraph.
Self-calculating indent:
The "self-calculating indent" option can be activated via the paragraph format dialog. The text within a paragraph is right-aligned. The longest line within the paragraph determines the left indent. The line centering remains intact, meaning all other lines are aligned according to their centering relative to the longest line.
Notes:
-
The self-calculating indent is not evaluated in text frames with variable width,
-
To ensure the function works correctly, a line break (soft return) must be created at the end of the line (usually via the keyboard combination Shift + Return),
-
If it is foreseeable that the user will not create a soft return, it can be set in the text frame properties that a paragraph end (return) is automatically interpreted as a line break.
Spacing
The spacings in Stylo do not work additively. Between two paragraphs, the value with the larger amount is always used. Negative values are allowed.
Above:
Spacing above a paragraph. The spacing above a paragraph is not effective at the beginning of a column.
Below:
Spacing below a paragraph.
Line:
Spacing between lines within a paragraph. The specification of the spacing can be either relative or with an absolute value.
Paragraph alignment
Here you can set the paragraph alignment. Possible variants are:
Font
Font family
In the popup menu, you can select the font family. A preview of the font is displayed.
You can also filter for font families using this field to reach a result more quickly. You can end the filter icon with the backspace symbol on the left side in the field.
Font style
From the style menu, you can select one of the following styles of a font family:
-
Regular
-
Bold
-
Bold Italic
-
Italic
If a font provides more styles, they are made available as a font family (for example, Helvetica Condensed).
Font width
Specifies the width of the font as a percentage of the em or absolutely. The font width can only be reduced. The smallest possible value is 60%.
Letter spacing
Here, a percentage value can be specified to increase or decrease the spacing between individual letters. The values are percentage values relative to the font size.
Other font attributes
With the two left buttons, you can toggle the underlining of text or outline on and off. The right buttons are used to set the capitalization in the paragraph format. Either what was entered is output ("Ab" – standard) or it can switch to all lowercase or uppercase.
Color
The color dialog opens, from which a color for the text can be selected. For an assignment, both the color dialog and the paragraph format dialog must be confirmed with "Done".
Enumeration
Symbols
You can select from the list which bullet point should be used for the paragraph. In the configuration of Stylo, it is specified which symbols are allowed.
Color of the bullet point
Click on the color area to open the color dialog and choose the desired color for the bullet point. Both the color dialog and the paragraph dialog must confirm the color.
Hanging indent
By default, a hanging indent is used. If you do not want this, it can be turned off here.
The indent value is defined in the Stylo configuration in the definition of the bullet points.
Flexibility
Reduce font width
For single-line paragraphs, this function allows you to reduce the font width so that the text may fit into one line. The maximum value by which the font width can be changed by the program is specified by "Max. Change %". If the maximum value for font width reduction is exceeded, the text will be output without a font width change.
Tabs
The list displays the tabs defined in the paragraph format with the associated parameters. To edit, select a tab from the list and then change the individual parameters in the lower area. Editing can also be done via the ruler.
When a tab is selected in the list, its settings appear on the left side. To add a tab, select New in the list, specify the settings in the tab settings area, and click Apply. To change a tab, activate it in the list, change the settings, and click "Apply". If Delete is clicked and a tab is selected in the list, it will be removed from the list.
|
Add a new tab to the list. You cannot enter and assign values until a new tab has been created. |
|
| If values have been entered or changed, they will be assigned to the tab list via this button. | |
| This button can be used to delete an existing tab from the list. Deletion can also occur by selecting a tab in the ruler and dragging it out of the ruler. |
Settings for the tab
Position
Distance of the tab from the left column edge
Alignment
Alignment of the text at the tab:
left-aligned, centered, right-aligned, decimal, or line splitting
Align to
Character to be used for decimal alignment. For example, a comma, period (.) or any other character can be entered to which the text should be aligned.
Fill character/Spacing fill character
A fill character for a dot leader can be specified here. A minimum distance between text and leader characters or leader characters and text can be defined. The specification is in percent of the standard paragraph font size. The grid of the leader characters starts at the left edge of the text column. This ensures that the leader characters are aligned line by line. The font attributes are determined by the standard paragraph font. For the tab of type line splitting, there is special handling for line overflow. In the first part, the string is output a maximum of three times. In the second part, the leader characters extend from the left edge of the text column to the overflowed text.
Exclusion
Specify how hyphenation should occur and how the spacing between words should be designed.
Hyphenation
Language:
Here you can specify the hyphenation language. If "Neutral" is selected, no hyphenation will be performed.
The language specified here is also used for spell checking if a spell-checking program has been installed on the Stylo server.
Min. Prefix:
Specifies the minimum length of the prefix from which hyphenation is allowed. Example: With a minimum prefix length of 2, "er-zeu-gen" can be hyphenated; with a setting of 3, the word can only be hyphenated as "erzeu-gen".
Min. Suffix:
Specifies the minimum length of the suffix. Example: With a minimum suffix length of 2, "är-ger-te" can be hyphenated; with a setting of 3, the word can only be hyphenated as "är-gerte".
Max. Hyphenations:
This setting limits the number of consecutive hyphenations. If the maximum number is reached, no more hyphenation will occur at the end of the line in the following line.
Hyphenate:
Hyphenation will only occur at the end of the line if hyphenation is turned on.
Word spacing
In the paragraph format, the minimum, optimal, and maximum wedge values can be specified. These are percentage values that refer to the normal word spacing. In the administration, the values can be set that should be used for new documents.
The following rules apply when determining the word spacing
The text is excluded with the minimum wedge value. If a word overflows the line, it is checked whether the optimal wedge value is not exceeded without the overflowed word. In this case, no hyphenation occurs, and the overflowed word is carried over to the next line. In centered lines without line overflow, the wedge value results from the optimal value.
The maximum wedge value is evaluated when checking the maximum number of consecutive hyphenations. If the maximum number of hyphenations is exceeded, hyphenation will only not occur if the resulting word spacing in the line does not exceed the maximum wedge value.
Generate
With this function, you can define the design of the text at the beginning of a paragraph.
Formatting at the beginning of the paragraph
Mode: Here you can specify for which area the settings should apply. The following settings are available:
-
None: There is no fixed character format at the beginning of the paragraph.
-
Number of words: Number of words, separated by word spaces, that should appear in the special formatting.
-
Number of characters: Number of characters that should appear in the special formatting.
-
Character: The selected formatting will be applied up to this character (inclusive).
Number/Separator: Depending on whether the number of characters and words or a specific character should serve as a separator, specify a number or the separator here. If it is a separator, you can only specify one character.
Design: The design is done via these buttons.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| B | Bold |
| I | Italic |
| U | Underline |
| O | Outline |
| Ab | Capitalization as entered |
| ab | Lowercase |
| AB | Uppercase |
Active formatting is displayed in black, inactive in gray.
Color settings
When you press the button, a separate dialog opens. In this dialog, you can set the color settings for the foreground and background colors. To make the setting effective, you must specify via the mode for how many characters/words or up to which character the function should apply.
Initial sentence
To activate the initial sentence, you must specify via the mode for how many characters/words or up to which character the function should apply.
Initial lines: Specifies on which line (baseline) the initial should be placed.
Initial spacing: Defines the space between the initial and the adjacent text.
Please note: In earlier versions, vertical alignment was additionally activated. Old documents with this setting will be automatically corrected. The initial sentence is automatically activated if vertical alignment was active and it was specified which area it should apply to.
