The "Distribute" function in a graphics program is used to arrange multiple objects evenly along an axis or within a specific area. It is useful for achieving a balanced and aesthetically pleasing layout. By distributing evenly, time is saved and precision in the design process is increased.
In Stylo, there are two ways to distribute graphic objects evenly: through the Floating Toolbox for graphics or via a dedicated function that can be accessed through the context menu. While the former evenly distributes the space between the first and last selected object, the function through the dialog also allows you to specify the desired spacing between the objects.
This function does not involve text within a text frame nor does it pertain to the automatic distribution of graphic elements within a display.
Distributing via the Floating Toolbox for Graphics
When distributing via the Floating Toolbox (see animated graphic in the previous section), the spaces between the objects are evenly distributed either horizontally or vertically. This method represents the fastest way to distribute spaces and align objects simultaneously.
The basis for calculation is the selection of the objects – within this, the left edge of the object that is furthest to the left and the right edge of the object that is furthest to the right. The order of selection is not taken into account.
For the function to be activated within the dialog, at least three objects must be selected.
The Distribute Dialog
With this function, you can distribute objects horizontally and vertically. The function can be accessed through the context menu. To do this, select the objects in your display and then choose the function from the context menu.
Objects that are in an active vertical alignment cannot be distributed using the function. Similarly, the position of objects will not change if they are relatively anchored. The option to distribute spaces evenly is also selectable through the Floating Toolbox for graphic objects and the Objects Palette.
Vertical
Objects are distributed in the vertical direction (Y-axis). Selecting the left icon for "Equal Spacing" will distribute the space between the first and the lowest object. This can also result in negative spacing, causing the objects to overlap. Alternatively, a margin can also be entered. The spacing field becomes active when you select the right icon.
Horizontal
Objects are distributed in the horizontal direction (X-axis). Selecting the left icon for "Equal Spacing" will distribute the space between the leftmost and the rightmost object. The result can also be negative spacing, causing the objects to overlap. Alternatively, a margin can also be entered. The spacing field becomes active when you select the right icon.
Tip
The space is distributed among all selected objects. If you want to keep individual groups together, please group them before distributing. In this case, their spacing will be preserved.
